I believe in making the most normal and unusual spaces into intimate wedding venues. This abandoned water works house in the shadow of it’s dam wall in Kwa Zulu Natal, is exactly that space. I imagined a couple going to Africa for a holiday and coming back married. We took the chic style of a city cigar lounge and anchored it in the raw South African landscape.

Every detail is a delicious mix of formality and rugged beauty. Sexy but warm. Masculine but soft. Ceremonial but relaxed. Opulent but rough.

All the elements of the day subtly point to idea of a destination, an adventure. From our globe inspired stationery, our couples ‘love notes’ and button hole keep sakes on their own post cards to the vintage cases. The flowers used are all indigenous or common to South Africa and are currently in season. Instead of a formal set reception table we opted for a relaxed dessert platter and brandy bar. Champagne on the cliff overlooking the dam was how we finished off the day. This again was relaxed, allowing the couple to just be there in the moment, together.

There was a magic in this day that was particularly serendipitous. All of my shoots are with real couples and we let the day unfold as naturally and as close to a ‘real’ event as possible. The day of this shoot was a misty rainy day which left the reserve deserted, we had the entire dam to ourselves. During the ceremony shots on the dam wall, Paul spotted a flight of swallows which he explain were the love symbol for their relationship. Swallows pair for life. The swallows followed us all afternoon.

It was like that afternoon was meant just for Paul and Clint. The collaboration of some fantastic suppliers was amazing but the fact that two people got to fall in love again in front of us is the true result of this shoot.
